Paper mills sometimes produce foul odours that directly impact on the surrounding community. This odour nuisance is often linked to the release of H2S from the internal effluent systems of the mill. It also comes from odours emitted by bacteria growing in the recirculating water. Indeed, kraft pulp production requires the treatment of sludges and effluents before they can be discharged from the mill.

The pulp and paper industry produces a significant amount of warm, effluent, with high organic matter, which creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Wine tailings by natural evaporation is widespread, especially in the Mediterranean region. Odours in natural evaporation ponds can result in a very bad scent for the community, who are exposed to an odour nuisance related to H2S. Due to the lack of oxygen in these basins, hydrogen sulphide develops there with microbial activity. Curative treatments against H2S have little effect.

In 2007, Yara developed a preventive process with INRA called WiNOx – it feeds the pond with nitrates. The dosage is done according to the flow rate and the load of the basin. This preventive treatment prevents the formation of malodorous compounds. It solves the problem of hydrogen sulphide and odor nuisance at the source.
